Local
information
Barnes is
a picturesque South West London village set in delightful semi rural
surroundings yet within easy reach of Central London and the City.
Barnes also has an active
Community
Association and the 'Barnes Annual Fair' in early July attracts
300 stalls and masses of visitors - well worth a visit.
Close to the Village centre are the
twin delights of Barnes common and the River Thames both of which provide
opportunities for delightful walks with the dog and family picnics.
Education
Barnes
is served by good independent schools. As well as St. Paul's Boys'
School and Colet Court, its prep department, the Swedish School serves the
Swedish expatriate community and there is co-educational Harrodian
School.
Nearby Hammersmith offers St Paul's Girls' School and
Godolphin & Latymer School, also for girls. There are no state
secondary schools in SW13, but St Osmund's RC Primary School in Barnes is
well regarded.
Transport
Barnes village
is served well by frequently running buses which go to Putney, East Sheen and Richmond upon Thames as well as
Hammersmith in the opposite direction, providing easy and quick access to Hammersmith
Underground station.
Barnes
also has easy access to M4, A3, M25, Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport.
Shopping
Barnes
does not feature large supermarkets which is part of it's charm. There is a Tesco Metro next to Hammersmith Bridge and there is a Waitrose
in nearby East Sheen.
Eating
and Drinking
The choice of restaurants and Pubs
in Barnes is considerable. Foremost among these are the very well known
restaurants of Sonnys and Riva which are famed throughout London. In
addition, there are more informal eateries purveying Pizza, Hamburger,
Salads and Spanish Tapas.
Perhaps the best known public House
is The Sun Inn which overlooks the Pond but The Bull which overlooks the
River Thames is renowned for its live music which features many famous
performers.
Parks
The
award winning
London
Wetland Centre (WWT), by Hammersmith Bridge, comprises 40 acres of ponds
and lakes and was the brainchild of the great conservationist Sir Peter
Scott. The area attracts rare birds and wildfowl from all over Europe and
is visited by large numbers of people every year.
Recreation
Barn Elms sports grounds are one of the largest such areas in South West
London. At various times of the year, you will find Football, Rugby,
Cricket and Tennis being played here. Barnes Sports Club has an
excellent cricket club as well as bowls, croquet squash and hockey.
For those seeking a more
exclusive atmosphere in which to pursue their sporting interests the
Roehampton Club features an 18 hole golf course as well as Tennis, squash,
swimming pool and gym whilst the Riverside Club offers racquet sports with
swimming pool and gym within an indoor setting.
With its many parks, access to the
river Thames, museums, galleries and historic houses, Barnes and the
neighbouring Putney, East Sheen and Richmond upon Thames will appeal to
all tastes and interests.
Further information can be
viewed at the official
London
Borough of Richmond Upon Thames website.
